Choosing an Airsoft Gun.

Hello Again this is Steve with The Sports Oddity. We’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from the Good People of Our Great Country wanting to know how to choose the Right airsoft Gun for themselves. So, I thought I’d take just a moment and produce this quick guide. Note, this is not an extensive guide that you might find in an Airsoft Gun Magazine but it should be helpful.

Okay, First things first. Price. Do you want a Cheap Airsoft Gun or moderately priced or Expensive Airsoft Gun? There are plenty to choose from in all of these categories. You pretty much get what you pay for just like anything else, but there are some exceptions. For instance, I’ve seen some Cheap Spring Airsoft Guns out perform The Moderately priced Electric Airsoft Guns in Fps (feet per Second) and accuracy. The Downside is that you can’t get the Automatic Fire with the Spring Guns. Depends on what you want I guess.

Next as I alluded to above you have the Spring Airsoft Guns and The Electric Airsoft Guns. The Spring Guns work with no batteries. It is a spring mechanism that is cocked and released to propel the bb out of the barrel. The Electric Airsoft Guns uses a spring as well, that is driven by a small electric motor mechanism which propels the the bb’s out of the barrel. This allows the electric guns to rapid fire. If you are concerned about power and accuracy the Cheap Airsoft Guns, Electric or Spring may not satisfy you. Unless, you look at the Gas Airsoft Guns.

The Gas Airsoft Guns use Green Gas or C02 cartridges as a propellant. These gases are not usually interchangeable but some Guns will use both forms of Gas. For the Money these are probably the best for power and accuracy. In fact some Airsoft War Games Camps have banned the use of Gas Airsoft Guns. “ouch”

Okay Moving on. Will that be Metal or Plastic sir? Right, the next choice is whether you want a plastic Airsoft Gun or a more Life like Metal Airsoft Gun. The more life like generally the more expensive they are. But don’t count the Plastic ones out. Some of them are very detailed, but if you want that nice weighted feel then look for a Metal Replica. Okay I know I could have gotten into greater detail here but these are the question we get the most. I hope this helped but if not go to the Website and drop us an e-mail. We’d love to here from you. Thanks for Stopping By.

Airsoft 101

Airsoft was born in Japan in the 1980’s due largely impart to Real Firearms being illegal. The crafty Japanese created Replicas of real firearms and Airsoft hit the market. Spreading first on the Asian toy and hobby market it eventually hit the USA and UK with a bang in the 1990’s.

Types of Airsoft Guns:

Spring Airsoft Guns - This type of Airsoft Guns is powered by a spring, which ejects the bb pellet out of the barrel. This is usually the cheapest Airsoft Gun and least powerful.

Electric Airsoft Guns - This type of Airsoft Guns is usually powered by a rechargeable battery or in many cases AA or AAA batteries depending on the class of Electric Airsoft Gun. This is the most common Airsoft Gun on the Market. They can be used as Semi or full automatic and have a wide range of velocities ranging between 150-500 fps. This airsoft gun uses a spring and piston mechanism to eject the bb pellets out of the barrel. There are different Categories of Electric Airsoft Guns listed as follows:

Automatic Electric Guns AEGs

Low Powered Electric Guns LPEGs

Medium Electric Powered Guns MPEGs

Electric Blowbacks

Mini Electrics

and Hybrids.

Gas Powered Airsoft Guns - These Airsoft Guns use pressurized gas to propel the bb pellet out of the barrel. Typical gases used for Gas Powered Guns are “Green Gas”,”Red Gas” and co2.

What is “Hop Up”? Hop up is an adjustable feature on many Airsoft Guns to make the bb pellet spin in the barrel. This helps the Airsoft Gun with accuracy.

Airsoft Guns - A learning Tool?

Okay so, little Johnny wants an Airsoft Gun. The first thing that invades your brain is the age old BB gun nemesis phrase “You’ll put your eye out”. NO WAY JOHNNY, No Guns for you! They are too dangerous, you’ll just get hurt. Well before you make any quick judgments like that let me say that you may be thinking about this the wrong way.

First of all Airsoft Guns are not your typical BB or Pellet gun that shoots metal projectiles at forceful velocities that could actually kill small animals or break a window. In most cases Airsoft Guns use a 6mm Plastic BB (round ball) that will not break a window even at close range. Not that Airsoft Guns don’t pack some power, because they do. I just wanted to distinguish between traditional BB/Pellet guns and Airsoft Guns. They are just not the same thing.

Okay back to Little Johnny. Instead of denying Johnny of his insatiable curiosity about guns, give him a good life lesson on safety practices that will last him a lifetime. Just because you won’t buy him an Airsoft Gun doesn’t mean that he will never shoot one. I’ll bet he’s down the street at Ralph’s house shooting the neighbors cat right now. Well, Lets hope not but that’s where the good life lesson in Safety comes in and best of all he will be learning it from you, not Ralph.

Here’s what you do. Get Johnny a Cheap Airsoft Gun and some 6mm plastic bb’s. Get some eye goggles or a mask and a real “Target Practice” Target. We don’t want to use cans or bottles or the neighbor’s cat as targets, okay? Then get ready for some real family fun in the comfort of your backyard. Teach Johnny how to always evaluate the area of play for potential accidents. How to make good decisions based on a safety perspective. It’s a good opportunity to teach real gun safety, and that will last forever. So Instead of having a knee jerk reaction to the whole thing, use it to help grow the youngsters safety awareness. That truly is an invaluable lesson that will last a lifetime. Well, until next time thanks for stopping by.
